I am such a geek
I'm writing this post in the email client of my Hiptop PDA-Phone. See, I thought it'd
be real cool if there were a way to post to livejournal from the road,
from the hiptop, including pictures from the wee camera it comes with.
Since there wasn't, I made one ;)
It's a little Python script that
runs from Procmail...it takes the mail, extracts posting parameters from
the subject, and posts it to LJ. The attachments are saved to the
specified webserver directory, and img src links are appended to the end
of the post for them. It lets you post to any journal you want, and
even includes security settings!
Not quite full-featured yet, cause you can't embed the images within the
body of the post, you can't post to communities, a few other things, but
I'll be tweaking it further, I'm sure :)
For those interested, I'll be posting the details in the hiptop community in a little bit, so others can use it too if
desired :) It's designed for the hiptop, but should work for anyone who
wants to post via email (with some minor tweaking).

Something good: Computer upgrades
Something bad: Being unable to patch a security hole on your server
Something disturbing: Getting hassled by the cops for a good deed!

And just to prove it works, here's a picture of my archaic work phone,
next to my work tea!

Okay, the line wrapping is a bit messed up, not sure why it's doing that :P Otherwise seemed to work pretty okay :)

Yay! Sucessful geekery!
It seems surprisingly good, actually

Curse you, fennec. Curse you! You set too high a standard of coolness in both programming ability and stuff you own. :P

You wouldn't say the former if you could see the script right now...it's a major hack ;) I'm going to wait on posting it to hiptop until I can get home, and clean it up a bit, lest the police revoke my geeking license ;)

Dude, you rule. I may have to look into one of these gadgets now.

In case you didn't already know, our geeky little fennec has also devised a way for us to connect to FurryMuck via our hiptop phones. It's a bot script through AIM, and it works beautifully. :)

Annnnd.. I heard this morning that they are being released in color this August, so you have a few months to drool. ;)

Not to mention with the release of the SDK (SOON) an LJ client built into the phone, and an SSH client are likely only a matter of time. ;)

Interesting. I'll have to look at it sometime, as I'm also using a hiptop these days. I've been mostly satisfied posting via the web browser, so far.

I didn't recognize your username when I first saw it in the hiptop community.
I believe I haven't seen you since the overcrowding of the apartment of Fnord in the fall of '01 -- An annoyance which I recreated for Dan's amusement the following year.

That sounds about right for the timeframe, yep! God, I can't believe it's been that long since I've been at AoF. I bet Crispy's about ready for me to clean the oven now!

As for the client, yeah, it's inferior to the web interface for posting in most regards. The only real advantage is that you can attach images, provided you've got webserver space. Haven't had too much use for it yet, but you never know :)

So, who else has Crispy infected with the Hiptop meme? I know he got Jordan, plus all three of us in my apartment have one because of him..

I didn't get one until late November, but I was lucky enough to play with a prototype last summer, and it was then I decided that it was going to be my next cellphone.

I do know of at least a half-dozen people back in C-U that now have hiptops as a result of seeing Crispy with his :)
