New personal record
Time from receipt of my latest replacement Sidekick and subsequent death of said sidekick: 16 hours. Let's hear it for Malaysian construction.

So, this makes it 2 B&W and 3 Color Sidekicks that have broken on me. And I've never even dropped one!

Obviously you are meant to remain an enigmatic cypher, cut off from the virtual world. ;)

Now that it's broken anyway, can you make it a DropKick? :)
Lumi (gordianaut): pistlumin_esc on April 21st, 2004 04:20 pm (UTC)
Yeah, really. My second just started acting up as the warranty expired. I'm not so sure I want to buy another one... surely there's a superior device I can buy at a premium. >.

The only other things that readily come to mind are the Treo (with its RSI-murdering keyboard of PAIN), the Blackberry (not at all meant for personal communications since its geared towards corporate IT staff) and... well, that's really it as far as I am aware.

Clearly we need to go form our own company and introduce a device for personal, always-on communication services that Doesn't Suck. If we opt not to do that we can, at least, cash in on the SK/CSK refurbishing business -- that's clearly a booming market sector.

Just wait
The next generation hiptops Won't Suck.
And they won't be built in Thailand (not Malaysia) either.
Jenniferburan on April 21st, 2004 04:24 pm (UTC)
What exactly is breaking?
Ferenferen on April 21st, 2004 04:26 pm (UTC)
A better question might be, "What hasn't broken?" You'll get a much more managable list of answers.

Actually, I'm pretty curious. I don't follow the SK forums at all, and the only problem (aside from the display needing a hammer to the forebrain reset now and then) I've had with mine is the keyboard/UI buttons/scrollwheel. Same thing with a local who has a CSK.

It's actually been something different each time, just to keep me on my toes ;)

BWSK #1: Keyboard died
BWSK #2: Lost ability to take/make voice calls
CSK #1: Net7 radio firmware crash
CSK #2: Display failure
CSK #3: Won't charge

I'll give 'em credit, they're consistent in the quality of their parts...no single point of failure ;)

Dude. That's awful. Yeah, I think I'm going to wait for something new to be developed. Or a massive change in the Sidekick.

Does rather make me glad I never got one. Stay tuned for the next advance in a possible alternative.

Reminds me of a story I heard ...

So several years ago, when palm computers are just coming out, HP is presenting its flavor of palm computers. It's plugged into an overhead projector, and the presenter is showing off to various press of various techie magazines.

One reporter in the back remarks, "My TI-85 does the same stuff... why should I spend so much on yours when I can get a TI-85 for cheaper?"

The presenter doesn't say anything, just shuts down the device, unplugs it from the projecter, and closes the lid. He then hurls it against the brick wall with a good deal of force. Then he picks it up, opens it, plugs it in, and turns it on again. no problem.

"Can I borrow your TI-85?" he asks.

Guh... I've only had... 1 B&W, and 3 Color. (Although the IR port on this color is taped on, but since it doesn't work so be it. :P)

My wife is still on her original CSK from early December '03, I'm on my second CSK in the same period. For her, gentle use == long life, for me, gentle abuse == flaked out screen.

Oh, and BTW, ljhiptop.py is still the best gizmo evar. :)
Brendan: Yeah I'm badroho on April 23rd, 2004 09:11 pm (UTC)
Well, I haven't ever dropped mine or anything, but I'll readily admit to fairly heavy use...Probably closer to the 'gentle abuse' side of the spectrum, with all the typing and screen-flipping. Still think 5 deaths in a year is excessive though, given the lack of severe mistreatment ;)

And glad LJHiptop's still working out for folks! In a way, I suppose the Danger/T-Mo foot-dragging on the catalog is great for business on my end. Or it would be if I were actually selling anything ;)

I had been debating one of those Sidekicks as a potential on-the-go web/AIM/Email/Much doodad. Hearing this makes me think I'll hold off technology generation or so.
