Just a friendly little warning to some of the locals!

Some of you when visiting may occasionally stop at the White Hen Pantry at North Ave and 83, for gas or snacks. It is my recommendation that you no longer do so. enveri stopped there this morning, for gas and a soda. This is normal enough; we're nearly regulars there, living fairly close by.

When she went in to pay, the clerk promptly accosted her, and told her she owed them money. The explanation was that, during a transaction last week, the clerk that day had undercharged her. The reason given for the mistake was that 'it was really busy'. They took it a step further, though, and said that she owed them $7, right then and there.

When she understandably balked at being told that she owed a business $7 for their mistake, based solely on their word that she owed it to them, they got quite belligerent. They told her there was store video, and had transaction logs, and implied that if she didn't cough up the $7 or a receipt proving that she'd paid the correct amount right at that moment, the cops would become involved. She had to get to work. So she paid. White Hen got their $7, and will never see the business of either of us again. And we encourage anyone else up in our area to avoid them as well.

Hope they enjoy the $7!

Wow. I think, given not being in a tearing hurry or anything, I would probably allowed them to call the cops and show their video. Just to watch the reaction of the cop to such blatant stupidity. *Then* informed them of the lost business.

But, I'm bitchy that way.

Yeah, would've been fun to see them try and explain it to the cops. It'd be like that kid in Better Off Dead. "$2! I want my $2!" Unfortunately, she had to get to work, and had to pay $7 and swallow her pride to avoid getting written up.
nekosenseinekosensei on May 4th, 2007 06:26 pm (UTC)
Yeah...I would have done the same too. You want to call the cops? Fine!
genetenveri on May 4th, 2007 06:41 pm (UTC)
Unfortunately, my employer is... rather draconian about being on time. The hassle of being to work late far outweighed the benefit of showing the clerk how stupid it was.

Even with the video... I paid the total I was given. When a clerk tells me I owe $10, I'm going to give them $10.

Like I said, given not being in a tearing hurry. Work counts as a tearing hurry.

I'd say that counts as biting the hand that feeds you.

Yeah, it would have been nice to deal with this idiocy right there and then, but in the end it's just not worth your time to deal with it. I'd say post this to Consumerist and write a letter to the parent company. In the meantime, I hope they took that seven dollars and got themselves a nice sandwich and a coke, because that's the last money they'll be seeing from any of us.

Thanks for the heads-up. We certainly won't be spending any money there again.

Now, if you want to really drop the bomb on them, I would suggest you submit this to The Consumerist.

That is just rude. I am a frequent visitor to a local White Hen myself. That is so stupid for them to treat you that way if you're regulars. Well, their loss. I will make sure never to stop at the one in Antioch. I'd probably start crying if someone did that to me. =^.^=

I waited til I got back into the car to cry.

The Shell (which is now a Phillips 66) on US 12 and Volo Village Road in Volo pulled off something similar, claiming when I went to pay for gas that they did not charge me for gas the last time I stopped there to buy gas and snacks and threaten to have me arrested.

I never shop there anymore.

I know that station, we pass it all the time on the way to staff meetings! Have even stopped there a time or two. Think we'll be avoiding that one now, too!

Hope you got a receipt for the extra paid amounts. I would certainly go back there to talk to the owner to complain. Making a threat to call the police like that is illegal and I think they need to prove it, else you could turn the tables and "suggest" (not threaten) legal action. Make a big deal about it.
Wolfiedarkwolfie on May 4th, 2007 10:02 pm (UTC)
Call corporate immediately. If you have the clerk's name, you can likely get them written up not only for bad customer service, but possibly for simple assault.

What the HELL. Unbelieveable. They basically shook down Genet, that can't be legal!
Bitey thing. Rar.: normalloboguara on May 5th, 2007 05:39 pm (UTC)
Damn. If not for the time thing, I'd have called the cops as well, myself, on my cellphone, nonemergency, and explain that a store was trying to shake me down for money, please send a unit to investigate.

And with gas stations, it's why when I'm somewhere I'm not familiar with or a rough area, I use credit at the pump or Speedpass. It's all through the computer, the attendant has no say in the matter.
