Post from the road..
..using the LJHiptop script I wrote.

Sometimes it's embarrassing to have a yuppie car. I've endured much teasing about the windshield wipers on the headlights. But I'm very glad for the item pictured in the first photo below, when I come out to the car in the morning to see the second!

Me and a coworker were discussing remote starters. Specifically, why should you have to be close to the car to do it? So we were thinking of plugging an internet-equipped cell phone into the car, which polls a server every minute or so. You login to the server from your desktop (at home or work, wherever you are), and tell it to start. The car picks up the signal, and is warm by the time you get up from your desk!

Course, OnStar may already do this, since they can unlock your doors from afar and stuff...but OnStar is creepy.

You can get it in VWs now ... but given its potential to be used for spying on you (there's already been a court case on the FBI doing this) I refuse to buy a car that has it.

VWs can't be remote-started because they're designed to refuse to start without the electronic key present, so thieves can't hotwire the car or make their own keys. Too bad. It'd be neat to make a device that would connect to your computer and let you put the key in and turn it, just like on the real thing, to remote-start the car!
